EU-funded STRONGBIONET project launched for building a more connected European bioeconomy ecosystem

The Horizon Europe project STRONGBIONET officially launched with a kick-off meeting held in Seville, Spain, bringing together 19 partner organisations from 14 countries united around a common goal: strengthening collaboration across Europe's bioeconomy ecosystem.

Over the coming 36 months, the consortium will engage stakeholders from research, industry, policy, education, finance and civil society to build a stronger, more connected bioeconomy community. Backed by a €4.4 million budget, STRONGBIONET will promote knowledge exchange, foster new partnerships and help unlock the potential of existing bioeconomy networks across the continent.

While Europe already hosts a wide array of successful bioeconomy initiatives, many still operate in isolation from one another. STRONGBIONET tackles this fragmentation through a "network of networks" approach, linking existing initiatives, encouraging cross-sector and cross-border collaboration, and opening new avenues for innovation, capacity building and policy dialogue.

A key deliverable of the project will be a digital collaboration platform serving as a central hub for the European bioeconomy community, offering dedicated spaces for networking, education, investor engagement and science-policy dialogue.

Beyond the platform, STRONGBIONET will set up thematic Communities of Practice, support training and education efforts, strengthen ties between innovators and investors, and support evidence-based policymaking, all in support of a more resilient, sustainable and competitive European bioeconomy, in line with the EU Bioeconomy Strategy.

During the kick-off meeting, partners aligned on governance, the work plan and initial activities, and discussed with European Commission representatives the strategic importance of stakeholder engagement, international cooperation and science-based policy for Europe's bioeconomy transition.
